sQuba: The First Underwater Car

Many have wondered about the possibility of driving a car underwater. Now, what used to be a James Bond movie exclusive only, has become a reality. Meet sQuba, the underwater car. It’s the world’s first real submersible car. Rinspeed describes sQuba as the world’s first real car to drive both on land and underwater.

The car has a steel chassis, while its lightweight body panels are made of carbon nanotubes. While on the road, it’s powered by an electric motor. Underwater, two propellers in the stern and two jet drives in the bow propel the amphibious car. The sQuba’s top speed is about 77 mph, on land, but it slows down to 3 mph on the surface of the water, and 1.8 mph underwater. The car can descend up to 10M underwater. With zero emissions, the design is even environmentally friendly, eliminating any pollution into the sea.

The convertible sports car also includes a self-contained on-board oxygen system to supply the driver and passenger with fresh air for breathing with the help of compressed air mask. Cool!

Aesthetic design aside, the open-top design of the car is actually a safety feature that permits passengers to get out quickly during an emergency, and also avoid the problem of excessive water pressure on the windows of a closed car.
